14.03.2013 Utilizing further SETE initiative for the development of gastronomy, Commissioner Maria Damanaki has made a proposal to the European Commission for the establishment of an annual or biennial competition between cities and regions of the EU for gaining the title of "European Culinary Excellence." The specific title will be awarded based on strict selection criteria which will apply throughout the production process - from raw material and cuisine characteristics to the dishes and the consumer experience.

The proposal was initially accepted at EU level, but requires further study and treatment to become operational. In any case, as far as the Greek tourism is concerned, this initiative is a good opportunity to strengthen the efforts of improving the gastronomic products and services offered by our country and include gastronomy in the portfolio of Greek tourism.
